Mixed media watercolor portrait painting process – real-time video
Curious to see how I paint portraits with watercolor, water-soluble pencils & colored pencils?
Want to pick up some of my layering techniques, and learn how to paint confidently without ever entering the dreaded ugly stage?
I'm releasing an exclusive uncut, 170-minute recording of my drawing and painting process in actual speed.
This technique can be used for any style of portrait painting – from realism, fantasy illustration, to caricature.
The videos are not narrated and don't contain any background music, so you're free to listen to any music you want while you watch and paint alongside me.
Is this video suitable for beginner artists?
If you've painted with watercolor before, I'm sure you'll be able to get value out of it no matter your experience. But I'm not explaining how to draw the features of the face, or other art basics. You'll need to rely on your own portrait drawing skills to sketch your character in your desired style.
If you want to draw a realistic portrait, I suggest that you use a good quality reference photo to get the proportions and shadows right.
Do I need to use the same art supplies you're using?
Not at all! Feel free to use anything you already have, just make sure that your paper can handle watercolor.
If you want to make the most out of the waterproof underpainting technique, I strongly suggest to use one dark Derwent Inktense pencil of your choice (but not black or gray). I find that blue, purple, or brown work best. Many art supply stores carry individual Inktense pencils, so you don't have to buy the entire set.
What art supplies do I need to replicate your technique?
- Watercolor or mixed media paper (sketchbooks are fine too)
- Any kind of erasable pencil for sketching
- Watercolor paint
- One dark Derwent Inktense pencil of your choice
- Your favorite watercolor brushes
- Colored pencils (optional)
Full list of products I used for this painting is included.
How long do I get access to the video?
In addition to streaming the video from the Gumroad app, you can download the video to your device. If I ever delete this product from Gumroad, you will still have access to your downloaded copy, so essentially you get unlimited access.

I'm using a drawing board for longer drawing sessions because my back health requires it, so the painting is recorded at a slight angle, looking over my shoulder. I made sure to include plenty of close-ups when I'm working on the details of the face. The angles shown in the preview video are representative of the footage in the recordings (the actual premium recordings are of higher quality). Make sure to watch the preview video to see what you can expect.
There are a few moments where my head covers the view, but it only lasts a second or two, so you won't miss out on anything important.
By purchasing this premium video, you're directly supporting an independent artist. Thank you! ❤
I don't have advertisements or sponsored content on my free videos, and I want to keep it that way. If you've enjoyed my free videos and would like me to make more, this is how you can support me.
